This annotation displays that I have met the necessary requirements for Standard 2, know the content and how to teach it. Through my practicums and university assignments, I have shown that I can effectively use a range of teaching strategies (2.1.1) to organise and sequence lessons (2.2.1 & 2.3.1) that incorporate ICT (2.6.1).
Lesson Observation 7.3 reflects my use of formative assessment strategies to design future learning sequences. I provided my year 7 English class with a handout that outlined different terms and definitions and asked them to put a ‘tick‘ next to terms they understood and could use confidently, an ‘X’ next to terms they had never heard before, and a ‘?’ next to terms they think they had heard but were unfamiliar with. I collected their workbooks and took note of the annotations students had made next to every word. I then used this information to identify which terms students were least familiar with and used this information to structure my next series of lessons. Lesson Observation 7.4 shows that I then used this information to create a follow up lesson that revised a number of key terms for my students. This evidence shows how I used formative assessment knowledge to design a learning sequence and lesson plan (2.3.1). My use of formative strategies is further reflected in my Professional Experience 2 Report in which my supervising teacher comments on my use of formative strategies to plan for future learning experiences.
The assignment ETM1.3 and my Professional Experience 2 Report both reveal my ability to draw on a range of strategies to organise content and incorporate ICT into an English lesson to create and effective learning and teaching sequence that expands the learning opportunities for my students (2.1.1, 2.2.1 & 2.6.1). In my English Teaching Methods Assessment, the task assessed my ability to plan a sequence of five 60-minute lessons and create an assessment for a specific English unit. I was graded on my ability to develop a logical sequence of engaging lessons, my knowledge of digital technology and use of a range of teaching strategies (See ETM1.3). I received a D for this assessment, revealing that I created a distinguished sequence of lessons that displayed my knowledge of the English syllabus and content points (2.1.1); my ability to organise this knowledge into a series of lessons (2.2.1); and my implementation of ICT into my programming (2.6.1). These skills are further emphasised in the comments of my Professional Experience 2 Report that state I have consistently demonstrated excellent content knowledge and have planned well structured lessons that embed a variety of strategies (2.2.1, 2.2.1 & 2.3.1).
This evidence proves that I have successfully demonstrated my ability to draw on a variety of teaching strategies and formative assessments to organise content into effective lesson sequences that incorporate ICT (2.1.1, 2.2.1, 2.3.1 & 2.6.1). As a result, I have displayed the necessary skills to achieve Standard 2, know the content and how to teach it.
