This annotation highlights how I have achieved Standard 4, create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments, with specific reference to my ability to manage classroom activities and provide clear directions (4.2.1).
My knowledge and application of a variety of strategies to manage classroom behaviour is reflected in Lesson Observation 7.5. This evidence refers to my year 7, mixed ability English class at a co-educational high school. With this class, I implemented a routine of 10 minutes of silent reading at the start of every lesson. I was forceful in insisting students enter the class silently and begin reading without speaking. Beyond this, I wrote my own seating plan, based on observed behaviour and student abilities, and implemented that consistently with this class (see Seating Plan). My supervisor’s comments in the evidence, Lesson Observation 7.5, praise my use of routine and a seating plan and recognise how effective both strategies were in settling my students and managing their behaviour (4.2.1). Furthermore, this evidence also highlights my use of clear instructions to manage classroom activities. In this document, my supervising teacher observes that I use effective modelling and clear, systematic and well-paced explanations to introduce the activity (4.2.1). My application of clear directions had a positive effect on my students and resulted in enthusiastic and engaged learning (see Lesson Observation 7.5). This evidence displays my use of seating plans and explicit instructions to manage classroom activities in my year 7 classroom.
More generally, my ability to manage all of my classrooms is emphasised in my Professional Experience 2 Report, that states I created clear routines, issued clear instructions and employed a variety of strategies to address different behaviours (4.2.1). In this report my supervising teacher comments that the classrooms have been managed effectively under my direction.
Through the attached evidence (Lesson Observation 7.5; Professional Experience 2 Report; Seating Plan), I have demonstrated the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear instructions (4.2.1), and have thus displayed competency in meeting the requirements of Standard 4.
